    • what is a film? What is a filmmaker? What is the difference between good film an bad film?

  • Students will discuss The questions:
    • What is a story? Why do we tell stories? Are myths true?

  • Students will discuss The questions:
    • What is a filmmakers responsibility? Do filmmakers have to have a message? Why are movies and TV so popular compared to other entertainment?

Objectives:

  • News broadcast introduction:  Students will each choose a piece of equipment they would like to specialize in to start the year.
  • Basic instruction on equipment given for entire news broadcast
  • Students will learn writing good intro and outros for anchors.
    • Multiple versions written and rehearsed

Activities:

  • Produce newscast.  Hands on with equipment.

Homework:

  • Watch a newscast and take notes on all the features you would like to add to the broadcast.  Bring in storyboards and ideas.

Day 3

Objectives:

  • Students will each learn how to use the CG computer via hands on training.

Activities:

  • Produce newscast.  Hands on with equipment.

Homework:

  • Notes on a news broadcast’s CGs

Day 4

Objectives:

  • What makes a newscast? Students will examine a news broadcast in class vs a talk show and dialogue about the differences.  They will report their findings to the other news class.

Activities:

  • Interactive viewing of recorded newscast

Homework:

Day 5

Objectives:

  • Workflow:  Students will diagram and explain the structure and workflow of the news broadcast

Activities:

  • Hands on in studio and control room making a diagram of connections demonstrating working knowledge of different connections and data flows

Homework:

  • Design a daily workflow for the newscast.  Prepare to compare next class.

  • Students will be introduced to film Terminology and some basic equipment

  • Students will interact with equipment and begin using basic functions of cameras.

Objectives:

  • Students will be introduced basic camera use.  How to expose a proper image and frame shots will be emphasis

Activities:

  • Using cameras with no automatic settings and sharing results

Day 4

Objectives:

  • Building production values: Students will be watch multiple clips from various media and recognize specific production values.
  • Framing will be the emphasis of this first exercise

Activities:

  • In class viewings and discussion

Homework:

  • Storyboard: draw 10 common framing used in filmmaking.

Day 5

Objectives:

  • Basic Visual media history.  Students will be given a short lecture on visual media centered around 1800’s to 1900’s
