Up In The Air

// February 2nd, 2010 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

This particular project was inspired by one of my favorite photographers, Andy Goldsworthy. Although I’ve only had a chance to see one of his photography books, I love how he combines sculptures he creates in nature with natural materials with photography. In his exercise he didn’t actually build anything but had many friends throw very fine (yet heavy) sand or ash into the air and took a sequence of pictures as the particles were first airborn and then drifting and falling to the ground. His shots are very cool and as much as I REALLY wanted to have all of my students throw dirt into the air and see where it landed I figured I’d better settle for colorful foam balls. They took turns throwing and shooting and it was a great day to just get outside, between rain showers, and throw some things around!

Christmas Lights

// January 7th, 2010 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

Students spent a lot of December taking photos of the colorful lights- inside and out. They worked with low light settings on their cameras and came up with some really cool effects.

Spider Webs

// October 26th, 2009 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

Spider webs are so intricate and so difficult to photograph. One trick is to use a spray bottle and lightly spray a layer of mist over the web and then photograph it. The veins of the web stand out and actually glisten with the light that hits them. This was a challenge shoot for these young photographers and they did a great job!

1 & 2 Point Perspective

// October 14th, 2009 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

After a class discussion and viewing of perspective shots, students were assigned the task of finding 1 and 2 point perspective scenarios to photograph. There were many really good shots – these were my top picks.

Rule Of Thirds

// September 29th, 2009 // No Comments » // Q1

There are 4 key spots in a picture that your eye naturally falls to and it’s called the rule of thirds. The four spots are at the intersections of a tic-tac-toe board that you draw/imagine in your view finder or on your monitor. This assignment involved shooting a single subject in all four of those spots and choosing the one that is most pleasing to look at and telling why. If you double click the image, you will see the full photo.

Macro Setting

// September 24th, 2009 // No Comments » // Q1

In this exercise, students set their cameras to the macro (close up) setting and focused as tightly as possible. These are some of their results.

(If you place the mouse over the photo and you will see the name of the student that took the picture. You can comment on these photos by clicking the “comments” wording at the top of the box of photos. Feel free to add comments to the student work.)

What Cool ColorsLilyCanna Lily

Like I said before, I love my garden. This lily was transplanted this summer and looked as if it just wasn’t going to make it. The leaves, except the top two have wilted and browned and I was ready to pull it out. I went out early Sunday morning and this is what I found. I think it’s going to make it after all.
